29 Jun JEFF BYRNE – WINTER NEWSLETTER REVIEW – FRIENDS
Every year we go into the Vintage period with huge excitement and anticipation as to what quantity and quality is to come from our vineyards, and after 18 Vintages, you think I’d have a grasp on what to expect… We experienced some extreme weather in January and early February with our rainfall close to 1 metre, which obviously made things very difficult for our vineyard team. What surprised me was that the rain pushed our picking time back a few weeks, and I believe it provided an ideal picking window for our grapes with some very exciting results.
My highlights this year are undoubtedly the Semillons and Chardonnays. Both are looking terrific with the Semillons just being bottled and the Chardonnays scheduled for bottling in October. We were fortunate enough to get our Tempranillo off but the Shiraz on the historic Audrey vineyard went to the Gods.
As you’re aware we also source fruit from other New South Wales areas, all of which had a terrific growing season with superb fruit coming from Orange, Hilltops and Canberra districts.
I can’t wait to show you the new wines! From the vineyard and winery team, we hope you stay warm this winter, and we look forward to seeing you in the Hunter soon.
